Marielis Garcia, born in New York City, began her dance studies with Edward Shellman, of Dance Theater of Harlem. She went on to Marymount Manhattan College where she worked with Johannes Wieland, Robert Battle, Jennifer Muller, and Denise Vale while earning her BFA in Dance. Marielis was awarded a scholarship to attend the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Contemporary Workshop under the direction of Milton Myers, and worked with Twyla Tharp and Robert Moses. Marielis started teaching at The Town School as Assistant Dance Teacher while she was still a student at Marymount Manhattan College. Upon graduating MMC, she went on to teach dance at the Kelly Miller School in Washington DC. Marielis returned to New York City to work with The Leadership Program as a dance teaching artist in NYC Public Schools. Marielis is a member of the Steps Repertory Ensemble and an active freelance dancer in New York City. With the Steps Ensemble, Marielis has worked with Larry Keigwin, Benoit-Swan Pouffer, Andrea Miller, Shannon Gillen, Asure Barton, and Manuel Vignoulle, among others. She also works with the Stefanie Batten Bland Company, Xodus Dance Collective, and Peter Kyle Dance. Marielis has danced with ODC Dance Company (San Francisco), The Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company (NYC), City Dance Ensemble (Washington, DC), and Ikapa Dance Theater (CT, South Africa).Through the Global Arts Initiative, Marielis had the honor of teaching dance classes in Cape Town, South Africa. Other guest teaching includes summer workshop at Appalachian State University, and Dance Art Creative Center. She is currently on faculty at Steps on Broadway and is honored to still teach for The Leadership Program.
